We participated in the 3rd Houston Barbecue Festival, which was held in the NRG Park area in Houston on Sunday, April 26, 2015. It is the third year that we took the BBQ Genius Counter to set up, and Davey Griffin, Ray Riley, Katy Jo Nickelson, Jennifer Willis, and Jeff Savell made the trip to visit with folks about Texas Barbecue and to see so many of the pitmasters we have gotten to know through festivals and camps and to make some new acquaintances with those we have not met yet.
Thanks to Chris Reid and Michael Fulmer, the event founders, for inviting us each year and allowing us interact with barbecue specialists and fans from the Houston area.
The most asked question dealt with “How do we get into Camp Brisket or Barbecue Summer Camp?” These camps are very popular and sell out immediately each time they go on sale. We did get to visit with many of the Camp Brisket and Barbecue Summer Camp alumni, and it is always good to see so many people who love to learn about making better barbecue.
It was at this event last year where we met Russell Roegels of Roegels Barbecue and began a year-long relationship where Russell and his wife, Misty, have helped with our ANSC 117 Texas Barbecue class, Camp Brisket, and Barbecue Summer Camp. Congratulations to Russell and Misty for becoming so successful in the Houston barbecue scene, and thanks for all of your help with our program.
